Support for children and young people

Knowing how to support young people with cancer is important as they navigate an incredibly challenging time, while also contending with the emotional highs and lows of adolescence and young adulthood.

Cancer can throw a curveball into their school, friendships, and big dreams. When we give them the right kind of support, we’re not just helping them through the tough times; we’re also boosting their spirits, helping them bounce back stronger, and showing them that they’re not alone in facing these challenges.

There are several organisations in Australia that focus on supporting young people with cancer:

  • CanTeen is a well-known organization that specifically supports young people aged 12-25 affected by cancer. They provide a range of programs and services, including counseling, peer support, and recreation activities.
  • Many major cancer treatment centers in Australia have specialized youth cancer services that cater to the unique needs of young cancer patients. These services often include multidisciplinary teams, age-appropriate facilities, and psychological support.
  • Redkite offers practical, financial, and emotional support to children, teenagers, and young adults with cancer, as well as their families.
  • While not exclusive to young people, Camp Quality provides support for children and their families living with cancer. They organize camps, workshops, and other activities aimed at providing a positive and enjoyable experience for young cancer patients.
